JCMA Discussion Group

Monthly Discussion Group

The aim of the group is to gain a deeper understanding of the three Abrahamic Faiths (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and our personal faith journeys. In sharing with others we gain mutual benefits of greater understandings of our own lives and those of others. All age groups are welcome. We look forward to meeting you all and continuing on a journey of mutual discovery. The group generally meets every second Tuesday of the month.

Scriptural Reasoning has been around for several decades now as an approach to interfaith dialogue. The JCMA Text Discussion Group uses a similar methodology to Scriptural Reasoning’, but with broader parameters for our texts’ drawing from all kinds of texts, such as books, poetry and TV series in our group discussions. Scriptural Reasoning, as the name suggests, limits itself to the three sacred scriptures of Jews, Muslims and Christians respectively.

JCMA On-line Discussion Group, Thursday 14 July 2022 – The Gift Of Wisdom’

In the July discussion group, we will be preparing the ground for the JCMA Conference in September, which will have the theme “Wisdom”.

We are inviting participants in this month’s discussion to bring along a piece of writing on the theme of Wisdom to share with the group. It can be any genre or from any source – sacred or secular. It could be a poem, or an excerpt from a novel, or a prayer, or a passage of scripture.

If you would like to share a text with the discussion group, please send it to David (who will be our moderator) by email at least 24 hours before the event (email to David.schutz@bigpond.com).

We hope that our discussion will bring to light various aspects of the “Gift of Wisdom” which we may further explore at the Conference.

“Back to the Future: The Condition of Jewish Belief (1966)”-Tuesday 14 June, 2022

In 1966, Commentary Magazine published 38 essays on The Condition of Jewish Belief. It focused on five questions and invited a number of rabbis, theologians and philosophers to reflect on the state of Jewish belief.

In a “Back to the Future” time-warp, our June discussion group will look at three of the 38 essays: by Eliezer Berkovits, Emil Fackenheim, and Jacob Neusner and reflect on how much has changed in the last 56 years?

We will seek to learn something about the nature of Jewish belief today from a time when religious belief across the Western world was changing radically. We hope to stimulate discussion around the way that not only Jewish belief but also Christianity and Islam has been challenged by “modern” outlooks.

JCMA May On-line Discussion Group –“Can A Scientist Believe?”

“There’s a sense of awe and wonder when you look at the night sky. You can imagine how, in ancient times, people tried to make sense of it all, with whole families of gods up there in the sky. In just a few days, I’ll be looking up to the skies for Stargazing 2018. But before I go, I’m wondering, is there any room for a God up there? And can a scientist have a religious faith?”. (Kumi Taguchi, ABCTV Compass)

We are inviting our JCMA members and friends to a JCMA on-line conversation/reflection” session on Tuesday, 10 May, 2022 at 7pm. We will reflect on themes raised in the ABC Compass program where host Kumi Taguchi talks to scientists – some who believe in God and some who do not – to ask “Can a ScientistBelieve?”. The program may spark questions of our view of the world, what is our understanding of the relationship between science and faith and the way we talk about faith to people with a science based view of the world.

Dates: Tuesday, 10 May 2022

Time: 7.00 -8.30pm
